A new report from the Federation of Small Businesses has highlighted concerns that growth is being held back by restricted access to finance. Is that the case or is there something else going on?

We look at the announcement from Nat West of the launch of Mettle, its new mobile-only banking service. Operating as a standalone service, Mettle is in pilot phase and seeking small business owner to be part of the trial to assist in future development.

To close this Bulletin, concerns from Business Debt Line, a charity which assists small business owners who have got into financial difficulty, that debt levels are on the rise. It’s calling for various support measures for smaller businesses to help them through difficult times.

With the 2018 Budget behind us we open this Bulletin by looking at finance-specific measures. The British Business Bank, the home to the government finance raising schemes, received several boosts from the Chancellor with the aim of securing business access to finance, particularly post-Brexit.

Earlier in 2018 we looked at the launch of Open Banking and how it is going to revolutionise applying for and controlling finances. How useful Open Banking is going to be is highlighted by the announcement from Iwoca that it has agreed a link up with Lloyds which will speed up access to finance.

To close this Bulletin, we review the latest quarterly statistics from the Insolvency Services. The Quarter 3 figures make gloomy reading with the number of businesses entering into an insolvency arrangement reported as on the rise.

As we get closer to the Brexit deadline, thoughts are turning to potential support businesses will need in a worse-case scenario. To open our latest Bulletin, we have news that RBS has set aside funds to provide financial support to businesses trading in Europe who may find themselves in a tight financial spot.

As highlighted in recent Bulletins, the Asset Finance sector continues to grow in terms of facilities to allow businesses to acquire assets. To continue the flow of available funds, we look at the announcement from the British Business Bank that it has allocated funds to asset finance provider Henry Howard Finance for on-lending to small businesses.

To close, our monthly review of bank lending to businesses. The latest figures from UK Finance reveal that bank lending continues to slip with limited demand for finance from businesses. Business owners seem to be adopting a ‘wait and see’ approach when it comes to making investment decisions.

Are we seeing a build-up to another credit crunch? That’s a concern the Bank of England has flagged up following an increase in the volume of what it perceives as high-risk loans. If that’s the case, what can you do to prepare?

We look at the latest quarterly business review from Creditsafe, the credit reference agency, which has a mix of surprisingly positive news on sales growth and a less positive outlook on a potential growth in late payment.

To close this Bulletin, good news from the Financial Conduct Authority with its announcement that from next year small business owners will be able to refer complaints about their bank to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Finally, small businesses have an option to pursue complaints which doesn’t involve going to Court.

Of those businesses which borrow money, what do they typically spend it on? To open this Bulletin, we review findings from Liberis, the short term lender, when they posed this question to their clients. The feedback reveals a variety of uses for finance raised, however one reason given does flag up a potential area of concern in terms of business health.

We are undoubtedly in uncertain terms and the latest Federation of Small Businesses survey confirms this by revealing a dip in business confidence levels. The FSB’s recent quarterly Small Business Index highlights the feelings of uncertainty and also identifies other areas which are of concern to UK small businesses.

To close, thankfully some positive news! Crowdcube has announced that it has hit a milestone in terms of £1 million plus equity raises. The news shows that far from being suitable for small finance requirements, equity crowdfunding is meeting the needs of larger, more ambitious business owners.

Not surprisingly, but not of any less concern, is the news that insolvencies are on the rise. What impact will the latest increase in Interest Rates have on those businesses already struggling?
