Despite confidence levels amongst many small businesses being muted, we open our latest Bulletin with a look at news from Hitachi Capital Business Finance that SMEs are seeing opportunities coming out of Brexit. Also, the latest Lloyds Bank research reveals that confidence is up in terms of production output across the regions. So not all bad news.

Dealing with late payment is bad enough but when late payment turns into no payment then that can be a bitter pill to swallow. That’s where trade credit insurance comes in and we have news of a new streamlined policy from Atradius designed for small businesses.

To close we take a look at the latest statistics from the Finance and Leasing Association which reveal that the industry continues to see strong growth in leasing and HP when it comes to purchases of plant and machinery and business equipment.

Continuing our review of the findings from the latest SME Finance Monitor report, we look at what is holding small businesses back from borrowing. The survey revealed four reasons why businesses feel uncomfortable in taking on debt.

Whilst many businesses think that lenders are reluctant to support businesses, one bank is actively looking to assist growing business. Arbuthnot Latham Bank has recently opened an office in Bristol as an addition to their office in Exeter, to cover the South West and we take a peek at how they can help businesses with their commercial finance requirements.

Finally, we review the latest FSB Small Business Index survey which highlights that small businesses are feeling much less confident that they were a year ago. What is holding them back?

Although Brexit is some way off, businesses and organisations are considering what the economy will look like post-exit. We review a new report from the FSB which focuses on availability of finance and highlights a significant small business funding gap from 2021 onwards.

The one problem that comes along with growth is finding the right balance between having too much or too little cash tied up in working capital. In this Business Finance Bulletin, we look at a survey which reveals how much surplus working capital businesses are carrying.

The Bank Referral Scheme, which was launched late last year to help SME improve their access to finance, appears to have stumbled. We look at news that the government has instigated a review into why banks are not referring on enough clients who don’t meet their criteria.

To close the Bulletin we share findings that UK business confidence is at a 4-year high with SMEs appearing to shrug off any doubts about a lacklustre year ahead.

The government is finally beginning to share the rules and regulations they plan to implement in 2017 to curb the late payment epidemic. We look at the steps they will be taking with effect from 1st April 2017 and no doubt large businesses will be concerned about another set of bureaucratic rules to follow!
